Welcome to SpeakEasy
A Documentary Film About Public Speaking

Aug 23rd, 2010 | 7 comments

SpeakEasy is a documentary film about the fear of public speaking, and the 2008 Toastmasters World Championships of Public Speaking. Filmmakers Paul Galichia and Brian Weidling embarked on an almost two year journey – conducting hundreds of interviews about public speaking anxiety, and capturing every stage of the tense, highly competitive World Championships of Public Speaking.

We’ve met so many amazing people and seen so many interesting places on this continent, I think back and it seems a little surreal to have made such an odd, fascinating, arduous journey.  Williston North Dakota.  Wetaskiwin, Alberta.  Erie Pennsylvania.  Vegas.  Homeless shelters.  Angola State Penitentiary.  Magicians.  I’ll rattle on as we recount the adventure and get ready to release the film.  We’ll have pictures and videos and blog posts and communities and message boards and Tweets and favorite links and all things public speaking…. and, of course, at some point soon, the film itself.

A link to public speaking and acceptance speeches…

Before we started the film, I never REALLY thought about public speaking. It definitely seemed… obvious is maybe the wrong word, but still just something to poke fun at or just simply experience with an “eh” and move on. Rarely would I notice a GREAT speech… especially in awards season.

Check it out – I loved Christopher Waltz’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes…

Long enough blog post title for ya’? At any rate, we had a fantastic interview with Terry Mcgraw of McGraw-Hill publishing. Yeah, he’s a pretty big deal, and a huge fan of Toastmasters. If you work for his company, and you finish the first ten speeches of the Toastmasters program, you receive a thousand dollars. Good stuff. Here he is today breaking news about the Apple “tablet”.

Great filmmaker. Brilliant. Genius. But not the best public speaker. Remember his Titanic speech? This is probably worse, right?

Yup, I shall be asking this question over and over until I get an answer. I’m persistent that way. We’re obviously very curious to see who will be holding this trophy as the World Champion of Public Speaking in August. This was Lance Miller…

lotsa lotsa lotsa notes

Over the weekend we started to give the editor our notes – this is no time to screw around, we went shot by shot, piece by piece, pulling apart almost every note of the film and making sure it’s being questioned, justified, and put in the exact right place. Painstaking, but we have the big picture right now. Most of the structure is ready… now it’s time to dig in again and do this. We basically want more of the drama that was the World Championships of Public Speaking than we wanted fear of public speaking. We’re trying to make two films become one.

However, we need more stories of bad public speaking moments!! Anything! This documentary film about the fear of public speaking and the World Championships of Public Speaking needs your help!!

In the meantime, there’s more of this going on every minute of the day:

Yep, it’s 2010, which can only mean one thing…

…our film will be finished and seen by the world. Suffice to say, this is pretty darned exciting. It’s been such a tough slog – delays with financing, long editing days and nights, re-shoots, endless therapy sessions (haha), and every other etcetera you can possibly imagine has been part of this process of cutting over 400 hours of footage (it’s still mind boggling) to 95 minutes. There’s just been soooooo much ground to cover.

Tonight, we see a long awaited new cut of the film, beginning to end. Chris Leong was all over it over the holiday season. After tonight, we’ll be seeing the finish line, even after we give him our notes to work on. We’ve had all sorts of new ideas to solve some narrative problems over the break, so we may be bringing those to the editing room. I’m sure Chris’ Jack Russell Terrier, Bolt, will have some editorial suggestions as well.

We’ll keep you posted on our progress tomorrow – fingers crossed. But it’s thrilling that the world’s only documentary film about the fear of public speaking and the World Championships of Public Speaking will finally arrive in 2010.

Either way, we sure hope we’re feeling this, just a little tiny bit, as we talk to audiences after screenings of the film.
