Monday night public speaking documentaries get a new cut of the film

Dec 18th, 2009 | 0 comments

Yup – Chris is going to show us some public speaking documentary madness on Monday night. Should be an exiting Christmas present for everyone! Here’s hoping it’s not a lump of coal (I know it’s not).

It’s playoffs time in baseball.  It used to be fun, when the Kansas City Royals were fixtures in the postseason every year.  It’s dim memory, but a memory nonetheless.

The playoffs, however, are when legends are made.  quiz1

Well, SpeakEasy has it’s new Mr. October:

trip coming up

So Timothy Leary’s ghost stopped by the editing suite today. In Venice on business, apparently. Told us to make the film a little, like, “heavier”.

Oh I kid, and this is no time for kidding. This is time to start making a few travel plans. Pick ups we need to shoot. Screenings to set up. Editors to hire. You know, bidness. We’re making the slow transition from shooting to editing to marketing and distribution – but right now, it’s all mushed together at the moment. There’s only 2 of us, after all, to make this whole shebang happen.

And it’s beautiful outside in Venice today. Perfect Southern California weather.

coming soon…. clips from the recording session..

Yes, I realize that the “coming soon, video clips!” thing is a little overdone, but what the hell, we’ve been busy! So, weekend update:

1. Screened the film for our esteemed executive producer Mike Maloy. It went really well. He gave us some brilliant notes, per usual, and then offered us some praise – coming from him, it was a major compliment. Mike has impeccable taste and instincts, and doesn’t compliment people lightly. So, you know, that was nice.

2. We worked extensively with Dave Eggar on the original song for the film. It’s always a pleasure, to understate, to work so closely with someone universally acknowledged as one of the most brilliant musicians on the planet. We will be posting video of the session in the next week or so. It’s remarkable footage, especially of Brian nitpicking a musical genius’ individual notes. Hilarious.

After a long stretch of drudgery and difficult and draining hours and labor intensive weeks and months, it’s starting to come together. There’s a little pop to our step that wasn’t there before. Feeling good, and getting better all the time.

rough cut complete

Sep 21st, 2009 | 2 comments

A rough cut was completed at 5:16 AM, September 21st, in Venice, California.  It weighs 2 hours 21 minutes long, and is in good health.  It has, like, an ending on it and everything.

Now the real work begins, which means we’ll be cutting out 25-30 minutes of the film.

No, not the show on TNT with Kyra Sedgwick as a no nonsense, tough yet vulnerably sexy interrogator (although any woman who can survive the ravages of both the Bacon Brothers’ music AND Bernie Madoff is ok by me, but I digress…).

No, I mean the closing editor we’re looking for.  We’re trying to find someone, a Mariano Rivera to come in and pitch the 9th inning for us, and help us close the film out.  We’re so close… looking at the final shot of the rough cut right now (no spoilers!), but need a closer to preserve the shut out and win game 7.  Tryouts begin next week.  I’d love a Mariano Rivera, but will take a 2004 Keith Foulke.  Clutch.  Or, in an ideal world, a Tug McGraw-Dan Quizenberry hybrid.  Brian’s a Phillies guy, I’m a Royals guy.  It will be 1980 all over again. Ah… the good ol’ days.

We met with Dave Eggar yesterday who is going to write an original song for the film. Dave is a virtuoso musician in the purest sense, one of the great classical prodigies of our time. No exaggeration. I’ve seen him play a Paganini cello concerto and then walk over to a grand piano to “improvise” some Rachmaninoff. Unreal.

We’re thrilled obviously. Besides that, we’re going to be interviewed by Beth Black at Toastmasters magazine soon. I’ve already told Brian he can’t mention anything about that time he did that thing that resulted in this other thing that had vague results on another thing. He’s upset about it but that’s the deal.

and…. we’re back.

There you go. A little sunshine. A little of the ol’ 8 hours sleep thing. Vegetables. Hydration. Catching up on TV shows. Watching a movie that isn’t your own. Reading a magazine. Some exercise. A nap for god’s sake. The joys of a 3 day weekend spent living a semi-normal life feels really, really, really really really good. No more complaining from here.

And back to the edit – still sorting through the notes from the test screening and trying to apply them to the film. One problem we’re running into: we have 415 hours of great footage. I would say almost 95% of it is completely viable and usable for this film. That’s…. uh… a lot to sort through. And we have essentially 90 minutes to use in the feature version, or as we’ve described it to certain people, “the movie theater version”. The biggest worry we’re faced with is basically stuffing a mansion’s worth of material into a closet. It’s a nice problem – in a way – to have.

Because the boxed set is going to be sick.

September

Sep 1st, 2009 | 0 comments

This may sound a little strange, but I’m sooooo happy September is here.  We know that we’re that much closer to delivering the final film.  We have a lot of people who are giving us great advice, if not helping with the actual workload.  One of those people is Mike Maloy, executive producer of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  Huge hit, amazing talent.  Mike worked in documentaries before that, and produced an incredible film about September 11th.  He’s a pro’s pro, and has totally given Brian and me the confidence that we’ll make the best, most polished and shiny little movie possible.  He also gave us some great advice recently:  ”stop shooting, cut forward”.  We’re doing just fine since then!  B

Brian’s birthday is tomorrow.  He hates his birthday.  Really funny stories as to why.  Send him a happy birthday!!!

No more downer posts!! The questionnaires are in and we’re really excited .  Thanks to everyone who gave such thoughtful feedback. Seriously, some of these comments are professional level development notes.  Unbelievable.  And it’s great to see how thoroughly people enjoyed the roughest cut we can imagine showing an audience.  Makes us very excited for the FINAL FILM.

However… the person who wrote “you look weird in suits” on their evaluation form gave possibly the most accurate note of all.  Since we have only been seen at events in production gear (jeans, sneakers, t-shirt), I think it came as a shock to some that we owned shirts with a collar or even knew how to use silverware.  Alas, we each own a shirt with a collar.  The silverware part is a work in progress…
